Bio
Born in 1977, Alex Anthopoulos has quickly ascended from weekend mail room staff to major league general manager. And all within a decade! Born and raised in Montreal, Anthopoulos was always a fan of the game growing up, becoming an avid fan of the Montreal Expos. Upon graduating from Ontario's McMaster University (with a degree in Economics), Alex sent out resumes, made phones calls and everything else in his power to get his foot in the door. This persistance finally paid off after close to a year. The recent university graduate accepted a non-paying internership to co-ordinate Expos players fanmail. He jumped at the opportuinty. Creating contacts within the organization and the league as a whole (including learning and networking at MLB scout school) Alex eventually moved onto the Toronto Blue Jays. In 2003 he was promoted to Scouting co-ordinator. His rapid ascent continued from there on, with stops as Assistant GM in 2005, Vice-President of Baseball Operations in 2006 and finally general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays in late 2009.
Philosophy
While it's early into Alex's 'reign', he has made one thing abuntantly clear. He's 100% behind scouting and development. The Jays have beefed up the scouting department as a whole, increasing localized North American scouting regions from 14 to 25. To counter stretching themselves too thin Alex hired a number of additional scouts. Cross co-ordination and information sharing will be paramount.
On the transaction front the Jays have become younger, with fewer long-term contract obligations. The AA transactions speak for themselves
